TestmATE software for automated testing of electronics

The conversion of test procedure steps into a testscript can be done in a few hours by an average skilled technician.

Whether a bed of nails is used or the product's connectors, if the Keithley instruments can measure it, the TesmATE software can be used for writing the appropriate test procedure. The results will be stored in Excel and serve as History Information File.

Testing of electronics, desing procedure

When designing a production tester for electronics, these steps are required.

  1. Define the test procedure to test the electronic product. This defines all test steps:
    • Define the inputs and outputs of the product to be tested.
    • The sequence of applying signals to the electronic product.
    • The sequence and magnitude of signals to be measured and their limits in order to meet specs..
    • User interactions
    • Error handling
  2. Determine which Keithley interface is sufficient for the entire test.
  3. Wire the test setup.
  4. Write the testscript and save it as an Excel template..
  5. Verify the correct functioning of the script and the response to correct and faulty results compared to the product's specifications.

Test setup, requirements

The specifications of the test setup determine what is required. The minimum requirements for testing electronics are::

  • TestmATE testsoftware for testing electronic products.
  • Keithley 2700 multimeter (mainframe)
  • Keithley 7706 interface card
  • An (aged) Windows PC with Microsoft Excel and a GPIB or free RS232 (COM) interface.

Apart from that, there are some extentions possible like:

  • A bed of nails
  • A programmable power supply
  • A programmable function generator

TestmATE functionality

When we developed the TestmATE electronic test software, the requirements of production testing came first. Our own production department came with these requirements:

  • A test procedure for testing electronics must be easy to write and to maintain.
  • It must be possible to start the test procedure with a single push on a button and result in a message: OK or NOT OK.
  • If NOT OK it must be clear which parameters fall out of specs.
  • Serial numbers must be updated automatically.
  • History information of all tested electronic products must automaticalle be stored..
  • Test reports must automatically contain: date, time, test engineer, serial number and customer name.
  • Serial number stickers must be generated and printed easily
  • Switching of test setups must be done quickly and easily..

There are some other useful applications like profiling a reflow oven and engineering measurements.

The basic test setup for testing electronic products consists of:

  • Keithley Integra 2700 multimeter with 6,5 digit display and a base accuracy of 0,0025%.
  • Keithley Integra 7706 add-on module with 20 analogue inputs, 2 analogue outputs and 16 digital outputs.

Application Notes

Linearitiy test applies a varying input signal to a product and checks if the output signal complies to the specifications. This test is repeated at several supply voltages.
Requirements: basic test setup + programmable power supply.

Functional test applies signals to a product and checks through the datacommunication channel if these signals are measured correctly by the product. In this setting the product too is controlled by TestmATE to change outputs and read inputs in order to externally verify the response.
Requirements: basic test setup + user DLL.

Reflow oven profiling This script determines the heating profile of a reflow soldering oven. This allows verification of the heating profile with the solder specifications. This issue is very important when lead-free solder is used.
Requirements: basic test setup + thermocouples.

Climate test stores the environmetal temperature of a product every minute and offers several input signals. The resulting output signals are measured, verified with the specifications and stored.
Requirements: basic test setup + thermocouples.

Datalogger stores the voltage and current of a Peltier thermo-electric cell. The temperatures on the hot and on the cold side are measured, together with the temperature of a fixed amount of water that is cooled by the process. All signals are stored and shown as a graph.
Requirements: basic test setup + thermocouples.
